How To Share YouTube Video on Instagram – A Step By Step Guide

0

Chances are you came to this page because you’re looking for a step-by-step guide on how to share a YouTube video on Instagram. If so, you’re in the right place! Over the next few paragraphs we’ll show you 1) how to download a video off of YouTube, 2) how to shorten your video to fit within Instagram time limits, and 3) how to upload the video and post it on Instagram

Let’s skip the life story and get straight to the instructions!

Step 1: Get the Video from YouTube

Before you can post your YouTube video on Instagram you need to get it off YouTube and save it as a video file on your phone or computer.

To do this, you’ll need one of the hundreds of YouTube video downloaders. In this example, we’ll use yt5s. It’s a free tool that takes a YouTube video URL/link and allows you to download the associated video file.

A word of warning: Most of these YouTube video downloaders contain links that could harm your computer. Only access these sites if you are confident you can do so without harming your computer.

Find Your Video On YouTube

First, navigate to the YouTube video you want to share on Instagram. If you are on your computer, select and copy the URL from the bar at the top of your browser window.

For this example, we’ll Rick Roll you with Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up music video.

YouTube Video URL

Convert the Video

Next, visit your preferred YouTube downloader and paste the URL from your clipboard into the text box at the top of the page.

Get YouTube Video

Click the Start button to move to the next step.

Here you will be shown the title and thumbnail of the YouTube video you want to share on Instagram. You can either leave it on the default 720p resolution, or click on the drop down menu to choose a different mp4 resolution. It is best to use 180p or 720p.

Once you have selected your preferred video resolution, click the Get link button to start processing your video.

YouTube Export Settings

Download the Video

After a short wait while it prepares the video, the Get link button will change to a download button. Click the download button.

Careful now: Here’s where things can get a bit confusing. Typically, the first time you click the download button, a new browser window/tab will be opened telling you the “Download Ready” or something like that. Ignore this and close that tab, this is not the download button you want. I don’t know what that download button does, and I don’t plan on finding out.

Go back to the page with the video thumbnail and title and click the download button one more time. This time the real download should start. Depending on the length of your video, your connection speed, and the resolution chosen, this could take some time.

The file will be saved into your downloads folder, unless you choose to save it elsewhere.

Step 2: Shorten The YouTube Video

Now that you have the YouTube video that you want to share, it is time to make sure that the video’s length fits within Instagram’s limitations.

Instagram has multiple minimum and maximum video lengths, depending on how you want to use your video:

  • Instagram Feed Video Length: 3 to 60 seconds in length
  • Max Instagram Stories Video Length: maximum of 15 seconds
  • IGTV Clips: 15 seconds to 10 minutes for regular account holders

Most users share their video to their feed, which accepts videos up to 60 seconds in length. A large number of users also use Instagram stories, which are limited to 15 seconds in length. If either is the case for you, you’ll probably need to shorten your youtube video to get it to fit within Instagram’s limits.

There are many ways to shorten your video, including some that are automatic and some that require manual work. If you’d like to know more, we’ve written a detailed list of YouTube cropping tools. For the purposes of this how-to guide, we’ll use the easiest option out there, LucidVideo’s automatic video shortener.

This LucidVideo shortener uses artificial intelligence to select the best scenes from a video and then combines them into a short, summary video. It’s free to try, so you’ve got nothing to lose!

You are able to change these settings to your liking by clicking the gear icon on the top of the import box. You’ll be able to generate preview videos of 3 to 15 segments that are 15 to 60 seconds long. For this example, we’ll stick with the default 5 segments/30 seconds in length.

Once you’ve selected your video, click the blue upload button. This will begin the upload and preview generation process. Give it a few minutes and then reload the page once the video shows that processing says it is Done!
